Some of the things that CERN is doing are absolutely extraordinary. It is difficult right now to know how some of these studies will impact our daily lives in the future... but they certainly will.

It is now

present, tangible,

within our grasp,

to taste, touch, savor.

Slipping through our fingers

a million grains of sand

moments

an hour-glass

sifting through

our days.

Nice words about life on the "To tell you the truth" posterous.
Carpe diem !

Thu, 11 Nov 2010 08:07:00 -0800 Photo of the day: Dali Atomicus by Philippe Halsman - Salvador Dali http://diegogiol.com/photo-of-the-day-dali-atomicus-by-philippe-ha-0 http://diegogiol.com/photo-of-the-day-dali-atomicus-by-philippe-ha-0

Two geniuses meet.

From Wikipedia: "In 1941, American photographer Philippe Halsman met the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí in New York City and they began to collaborate in the late 1940s.

The 1948 work Dali Atomicus explores the idea of suspension, depicting three cats flying, water thrown from a bucket, an easel, a footstool and Salvador Dalí all seemingly suspended in mid-air. The title of the photograph is a reference to Dalí's work Leda Atomica (at that which can be seen in the right of the photograph behind the two cats.)

Halsman reported that it took 28 attempts to be satisfied with the result. This is the unretouched version of the photograph that was published in LIFE magazine. In this version the wires suspending the easel and the painting, the hand of the assistant holding the chair and the prop holding up the footstool can still be seen. The frame on the easel is still empty.

The copyright for this photo was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office but according to the U.S. Library of Congress was not renewed, putting it in the public domain in the United States and countries which adopted the rule of the shorter term."

Wed, 06 Oct 2010 09:33:00 -0700 CERN: Photowalk contest winners http://diegogiol.com/cern-photowalk-contest-winners http://diegogiol.com/cern-photowalk-contest-winners
Media_httpcdswebcernc_aglxr

On August the CERN organized a photowalk for 40 amateur photographers who wanted to partipate. The same was done by DESY in Germany, Fermilab in the US, KEK in Japan and TRIUMF in Canada.

Being an engineer, a fan of the CERN's work and passionate about photography, I really didn't want to miss this opportunity to visit the installations. So I was very happy when I was selected among those 40 people who could participate.

But the big surprise came a few weeks later when they informed me that two of my photos were among the three that would represent CERN in the international contest, if I was already happy by participating I cannot describe what I felt when I heard the news !

Here there is a link to the article on the CERN eMagazine:

And here to the page to vote (where you can see all the photos from the finalists from the different labs):

If I had to put a name on this picture I would call it ugly beauty. Fantastic contrast between the beauty of the sunset and the industrial substation.
